Canadian Mount

Below is my mount from the deer I shot in Canada back in November, it turned out great and is better than I imagined! The taxidermist said it was the biggest neck he has done all season measuring 27'' and the next closest measured only 24''.... with the size of the head and neck it really makes the mount.

The Next Generation Of Family Hunter's

Monday, November 17, 2008

Last week I went to Athens, Canada to hunt with a friend, Drew Perkins, who I played hockey with WAYYY back in the day and also his father, Brian Perkins, who coached for and against me. We hunted hard for four days from 4am to sunset and I only saw 2 deer the entire trip, one of them is below...

258 lbs / 209 lbs dressed

Coyote Weekend

This weekend Mike and I cleaned up his properties coyote problem, we shot three coyotes, two males and one female. Also, we were lucky enough to have a magnificent skinner to help us skin two of the animals to save their pelts.

Coyote 1 (10/10/08)

Mike shot this dog at a distance of only 20 yards after it came into our dying rabbit distress call. It was dark out when he came in and all you could see was his black silhouette.

We guessed this dog to be in the 40 lb range.

Coyote 2 (10/11/08) I shot this female at around 6:30pm, we watched it sprint for about 300 yards towards our distress call before I stopped her "dead" in her tracks at a little over 100 yards.

We don't think she broke the 35 lb mark…she was tiny.

Coyote 3 (10/12/08) I shot this dog in the middle of a field after getting only a quick glimpse before he started to run away…Mike stopped him by barking like a dog, as soon as he turned and faced us I shot him.

He was absolutely massive we guessed him to be in the mid 50 lb range and thought him to be a 3 ½ - 4 year old dog. Also, his coat was a bright blond color… a totally different looking coat than the previous two coyotes.

Our pelts.

Dead Deer Walking

Last weekend I set up a trail camera on the Sorbera property. The camera takes pictures based on differences in heat and movement and has an infrared flash (infrared light is invisible to their eyes) to take pictures at night. The camera is in a section of woods that is very dark so I have yet to get a color photo; it has a light sensor to decide if the infrared flash is needed. I had 51 pictures after about 1.5 days...I can only imagine what I will get after a week. No bucks yet!

Turkey Time!

Finally after six days of hunting from 3:30am to 12 noon and 13500 miles of driving, I have finally got a turkey. It weighted 21.6 pounds and was taken in Canton.

Bike Routes

It is finally that time of year where I can go out and enjoy the warm weather and get off the stationary bike. After moving down to Long Island away from the small town I have realized that road biking has become a suicide mission rather than an exercise mission. Long Island doesn’t believe in the pedestrian right of way rules making road biking a hazard to your health. However, if a drive out east the roads are much more calm and comfortable, it is just hard to get past the fact I have to drive my car 45 minutes to ride my bike. I found a way to fix this problem with the purchase of my new mountain bike…believe it or not Long Island is covered with trails!

Map 1

Graham Hills Park is only 8 miles from Kristen’s apartment so it is an easy trip for me. I logged a little over 12 miles however, the trails are very confusing and after studying my GPS I realized I basically kept going in circles the whole time.

Map 2

Stillwell Woods is a park in Nassau County that is another confusing system of trails, I ended up in people’s backyards multiple times. I rode 15 miles.

Map 3

Rocky Point is by far my favorite trail system, I have been there multiple times this year and just can’t get enough. It is a DEC property that is one big loop that only allows one way. There are different sections that are considered black diamond trails that get very technical however, you do not have to ride these sections. The full loop, with all the black diamond trails, is 19 miles.

Map 4

This is my main road bike course that stretches into the Town of Riverhead and the Hamptons and is 29.8 miles. There is very little traffic out there and the shoulders are quite large making for a great route. Not to mention all the fun things to look at i.e. mansions, exotic cars, and vineyards.
